ROCKY PATEL BRAND HISTORY
Rakesh “Rocky” Patel has built Rocky Patel Premium Cigars into a massive brand over the span of three decades. Rocky Patel cigars are sold in virtually every premium cigar retailer around the world, and Rocky’s persistent and strategic promotion of his brand has made it a force to be reckoned with.
Rocky was raised in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and was first introduced to premium cigars while he worked as an entertainment and product liability lawyer in California. He fell in love with good cigars and decided to pursue getting into the business, which wasn’t easy as an outsider with no family lineage or connections in the tobacco world.
At the height of the Cigar Boom in 1995, he debuted his first cigar brand, Indian Tabac (named for the Indian Motorcycle brand). The Indian Tabac brand was well received by cigar retailers who were eager to feature new products at a time when getting enough cigars to satisfy demand was tough. Under the Indian Tabac franchise, Rocky introduced a series of handcrafted Honduran cigars with bolder flavor profiles that were packaged in eye-catching boxes and bands. An astute marketer and salesman, Rocky aggressively promoted his new cigar company through a rigorous schedule of events and new product releases, meeting with retailers and consumers across the country in person.
The difficulty in attaining quality tobacco and the challenges of manufacturing a consistent product shaped Rocky’s perspective early on. An elite group of manufacturers traditionally harbored access to the finest premium tobacco. Acquiring high-quality, well-aged tobacco and setting sustainable manufacturing goals became an obsession for Rocky.
Following a considerable degree of success, Rocky made the decision to transition away from the Indian Tabac name in 2003 in favor of premiering his signature Rocky Patel brand. The risk paid off handsomely due to Rocky’s charisma and relentless salesmanship. His hands-on approach to his cigar production also played a role in his progress. To ensure a higher degree of cigar quality, Rocky capped output at 250 cigars per roller per day in the Central American factories he contracted to make his brands. A more balanced production schedule improved quality control among notoriously fast rollers who were accustomed to churning out as many as 400 to 500 cigars a day. Most Rocky Patel cigars are handcrafted at Nestor Plasencia’s factory in Honduras or the Tabacalera Villa Cuba S.A. (TaviCusa) cigar factory in Estelí, Nicaragua, a facility co-owned by Rocky.
Rocky also owns and operates several cigar lounges around the country, christened Burn by Rocky Patel. He opened his first lounge in Naples, Florida, in 2010 and has added more locations in Pittsburgh, Oklahoma City, Indianapolis, and Atlanta in recent years. Burn by Rocky Patel offers a lively atmosphere to enjoy cigars, cocktails, spirits, and music, and the lounges have been successful in attracting a new crop of younger cigar lovers.
Today, a strong network of family members and friends works closely with Rocky in managing and growing the Rocky Patel brand. Owing to his background as an attorney, Rocky has proven a fierce advocate for the premium cigar industry in the fight against federal regulation and unwarranted taxation of cigars. He works closely with the Cigar Rights of America (CRA), an organization whose mission is to unite manufacturers, retailers, and consumers to protect the public’s right to enjoy premium cigars.
ROCKY PATEL BRAND OVERVIEW
Rocky Patel is often cited as the “hardest working man in the cigar business.” His competitive, entrepreneurial spirit is reflected in an expansive brand portfolio that includes many highly rated, bestselling blends.
Well-known releases such as Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 and Vintage 1992 cemented the brand’s early reputation in the marketplace. A smooth, complex combination of aged Dominican and Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos yields consistent flavor courtesy of a sumptuous Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper on the Vintage 1990, while Vintage 1992 cigars resonate with a deep, earthy profile finished in an Ecuador Sumatra wrapper.
Rocky’s Vintage series encompasses several other notable blends, including Rocky Patel Vintage 1999, a milder blend with a Connecticut Shade wrapper, and Rocky Patel Vintage 2003, a luscious, medium-bodied cigar with a glistening Cameroon wrapper. Vintage 2006 rounds out the collection with a dark San Andrés wrapper leaf. The Vintage series is considered a pillar in Rocky’s portfolio today.
To celebrate ten years as a cigar-maker, Rocky debuted Decade, a profound blend of proprietary Nicaraguan tobaccos beneath an oily Ecuador Sumatra wrapper. Rocky Patel Decade cigars are handmade in a collection of popular sizes that deliver robust notes of cedar, earth, nuts, and black cherry. Decade scored an impressive 95-point rating in Cigar Aficionado in 2008.
Five years later, Rocky added his 15th Anniversary blend, which earned a respectable 93-point rating with hearty notes of cocoa, espresso bean, and oak. A Cuban-seed wrapper, grown in Ecuador, harbors premium Nicaraguan long-fillers in a handful of classic shapes.
In 2004, Rocky introduced The Edge brand, a simple, value-based line, originally available in just two sizes (Toro and Torpedo) that were packaged in rugged 100-count boxes. The Edge cigars became a hit with consumers, and Rocky capitalized on their popularity by offering more sizes in standard 20-count boxes and adding several new blends. Today, The Edge franchise includes the original Maduro and Corojo blends in addition to Connecticut, Sumatra, Habano, and Candela wrapper varietals. Rocky even released a barber-pole cigar, The Edge A-10, which boasts the original Maduro and Corojo wrappers in a single blend. The Edge Habano earned a notable 94-point rating in Cigar Aficionado. And in 2024, Rocky debuted a higher-end edition, The Edge 20th Anniversary, to celebrate the brand’s twentieth year.
Like many premium cigar-makers, Rocky loves to commemorate milestone birthdays, and for his sixtieth he pulled out the stops, announcing three new releases in 2021. At the top is Rocky Patel Sixty. The 96-rated smoke earned a ‘#2 Cigar of the Year’ title from the critics in 2022 for its refined profile of coffee bean, almond, and red pepper with a strong undercurrent of leather and wood. A toothy San Andrés wrapper leaf covers well-aged Nicaraguan long-fillers in a series of box-pressed sizes packaged in elaborate red boxes and bands.
Rocky also debuted his high-end White Label in 2021, which features a chestnut-blond Connecticut Shade wrapper leaf over an intricate blend of Nicaraguan and Honduran long-filler tobaccos. Tasting notes of vanilla bean and spice mingle throughout a toasty, nutty profile drawn from some of Rocky’s most prized tobaccos.
And Rocky Patel Disciple completed a trio of distinctive new cigars for 2021 with its thick San Andrés wrapper. Underneath are vintage binder and filler tobaccos grown in Nicaragua. Disciple is handcrafted at the TaviCusa factory in Estelí, Nicaragua.
Other key performers in Rocky’s portfolio include the 91-rated Rocky Patel Sun Grown, a Honduran-made smoke finished in an oily Ecuador Sumatra leaf, and the 95-rated Sun Grown Maduro, which the critics in Cigar Aficionado awarded ‘#2 Cigar of the Year’ honors in 2016.
Rocky also produces his bestselling Velvet Edition and Ocean Club cigars exclusively for Holt’s. Velvet Edition is a creamy and nutty smoke with a dark-blond Ecuador Connecticut wrapper, while Ocean Club imparts generous notes of leather, cedar, and spice courtesy of an oily Nicaraguan wrapper drawn over a complex recipe of Dominican and Nicaraguan long-fillers tucked within a Mexican binder.
Rocky’s drive to blend new cigars on a prolific scale led to the creation of the Rocky Patel Mulligans franchise, an extensive collection of affordable bundles, also exclusive to Holt’s. The Mulligans brand is home to dozens of popular cigars Rocky originally blended as side projects and experimental new releases. Explore the Rocky Patel Mulligans portfolio when you’re looking to try Rocky’s latest and greatest new cigars for an unbelievable everyday discount.
Rocky Patel’s footprint in the premium cigar world is undeniable. Never miss an opportunity to meet him in person at one of the many events he hosts around the country and find out why so many consumers connect with the man as much as they do with his cigars. We guarantee you won’t regret getting acquainted with Rocky Patel.
