ASHTON CIGAR BRAND HISTORY
The Ashton cigar brand was founded by Robert Levin in 1985 and is headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Ashton cigars are handmade in the Dominican Republic in the Tabacalera A. Fuente factory. Ashton is sold in over 75 countries and is a “Top 5” bestselling brand in the United States market, recognized for quality, consistency and exquisite flavor. Levin’s exposure to the cigar business began during his youth in the 1950s when his father purchased the historic retail cigar store, Holt’s Cigar Company, located in downtown Philadelphia. Levin subsequently took over and expanded the business. Following years of consistent growth with cigar retail and mail order operations, Levin decided to apply his expertise in the cigar world toward developing his own brand, in what would effectively become Ashton Cigars. The Ashton brand debuted in the early 1980s and garnered a notable following within a short period of time. Ultimately, Levin’s decision to partner with the Fuente family to handle all of the brand’s production would prove a perceptive and mutually beneficial move. Well-equipped to accommodate an expanded ceiling for production, the Fuente family’s factory in the Dominican Republic met increased consumer demand while preserving an exceptional level of quality control. By the mid to late 1980s, development of new cigar lines could effectively be undertaken at a seamless pace.
ASHTON BRAND OVERVIEW
Ashton released two new blends, Ashton Aged Maduro and Ashton Cabinet Selection, in 1988. A toothy Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper covers premium Dominican long-filler tobaccos in Ashton Aged Maduro and the blend became a benchmark among Dominican Maduros. Ashton Cabinet Selection is a more refined edition of the original Ashton blend, but the tobaccos are aged longer, for a minimum of five to seven years. Ashton Cabinet is rated 94 points by the critics in Cigar Aficionado and is considered an elite Connecticut Shade blend.
During the Cigar Boom of the 1990s, the Ashton brand flourished thanks to the meticulous production standards of the Fuente family and the implementation of a dedicated Ashton sales force. Several offerings from the original portfolio continue to magnify the brand’s popularity and global reputation for excellence, including Ashton 8-9-8, Magnum, Churchill, Corona, Double Magnum, and Prime Minister. Ashton Cabinet No. 7 and Cabinet No. 8, Ashton Cabinet Pyramid, Ashton Aged Maduro No. 10, and Ashton Aged Maduro No. 40 are also among the brand’s bestselling sizes.
In 1999, one of the first full-bodied cigars to gain widespread attention in the U.S. market was introduced, Ashton Virgin Sun Grown (VSG), which features a hearty Ecuador Sumatra wrapper leaf over a patiently aged recipe of the finest Dominican binder and filler tobaccos available. To this day, Ashton VSG cigars are among the most sought-after full-bodied profiles in the market. A thorough portfolio of formats has made the full-flavored blend accessible to a wide segment of consumers with Ashton VSG Robusto, Ashton VSG Torpedo, and Ashton VSG Spellbound comprising the line’s most requested shapes.
