H. UPMANN BRAND HISTORY
The esteemed H. Upmann brand dates back to Cuba in 1843 when German banker Hermann Dietrich Upmann arrived in Havana to oversee the interests of an importing/exporting firm in Germany. He subsequently purchased a cigar factory in Havana seeing potential to grow the business as an importer of cigars to Europe. Heinrich Upmann succeeded his uncle and company founder, Hermann, in running the operation upon Hermann’s retirement in 1890. In turn, Heinrich Upmann’s nephews, Albert and Hermann Upmann, took the company over upon Heinrich’s death in 1914. The H. Upmann brand had gained international recognition by this point for producing exquisite cigars. Numerous medals and awards are attributed to H. Upmann cigars and the company has even been credited with the introduction of packaging cigars in cedar boxes.
Despite the success of the H. Upmann brand, Hermann and Albert concealed a German-intelligence network through their Cuban businesses, resulting in a 1917 seizure of the Upmann’s U.S.-based properties. With an attempt to flee Cuba on the horizon, Cuban government officials learned of the brothers’ planned escape and jailed the pair on charges of fraudulent banking activities. An ensuing bankruptcy claimed both the H. Upmann Bank as well as the H. Upmann cigar operation. The brand would pass through a handful of owners over the next two decades who were licensed to sell the H. Upmann brand in Europe.
Makers of the Montecristo brand, Menendez, Garcia y Cia Co., took possession of H. Upmann in 1937 and transferred the brand’s operations to the Dominican Republic following the U.S. trade embargo with Cuba in 1960. Although a Cuban-made H. Upmann is still manufactured, tobacco giant Altadis U.S.A. owns the rights to H. Upmann cigars sold in the premium U.S. market today. H. Upmann is positioned in the renowned Altadis U.S.A. portfolio alongside other celebrated Cuban-legacy brands, Romeo y Julieta and Montecristo.
