About Taxes
Due to the recent Supreme Court decision in South Dakota v. Wayfair, Inc., States now have the authority to require out of state mail-order companies to collect and remit sales tax. The effective dates for these requirements vary by state. In accordance with these varying requirements, Holt’s will collect sales tax from the customer and remit the tax on their behalf to the appropriate State.
Alabama Purchasers
Holt’s has collected the simplified sellers use tax on taxable transactions delivered into Alabama and the tax will be remitted on the customer’s behalf to the Alabama Department of Revenue.
Colorado Purchasers
Holt’s is required to collect and remit tobacco excise taxes on the premium cigars you buy from us. The tax we collect is 56% of wholesale price.
Hawaii Purchasers
Effective July 1, 2023, Holt’s is no longer able to ship cigars or tobacco products to the state of Hawaii due to the passage of Hawaii Senate Bill 975.
Indiana Purchasers
Holt’s is required to collect and remit tobacco excise taxes on the premium cigars you buy from us. The tax we collect is 24% of wholesale price.
Maine Purchasers
Holt’s is required to collect and remit tobacco excise taxes on the premium cigars you buy from us. The tax we collect is 43% of wholesale price.
Maryland Purchasers
As of October 2019, Holt’s is required to collect and remit tobacco excise taxes on the premium cigars you buy from us. See Maryland House Bill 1301. Please note this excise tax is in addition to the Maryland sales/use tax already imposed on tobacco products sold to Maryland customers. Premium cigars will be taxed at 15% of the wholesale price, which will equate to an average retail price increase of 7-9%.
Michigan Purchasers
Holt’s is required to collect and remit tobacco excise taxes on the premium cigars you buy from us. The tax we collect is 32% of wholesale price with a maximum of $0.50 on cigars.
North Carolina Purchasers
Holt’s is required to collect and remit tobacco excise taxes on the premium cigars you buy from us. The tax we collect is 12.8% of wholesale price with a maximum of $0.30 per cigar.
Ohio Purchasers
Holt’s is required to collect and remit tobacco excise taxes on the premium cigars you buy from us. See Ohio Code 5743.62. Please note this excise tax is in addition to the Ohio sales/use tax already imposed on tobacco products sold to Ohio customers. The Ohio Excise Tax rate will differ depending on the type of tobacco product purchased:
- Most premium cigars will be taxed at 17% of the wholesale price, which would equate to an average retail price increase of 8-11% with a maximum of sixty-four cents ($.64) per premium cigar.
- Most little cigars with a filter or tip will be taxed at 37% of the wholesale price, which would equate to an average retail price increase of 25-30%.
South Dakota Purchasers
Effective January 1, 2022, Holt’s is required to collect and remit tobacco excise taxes on the premium cigars you buy from us. The tax we collect is 35% of wholesale price. Signature of an individual 21 years of age or older is required for delivery.
Virginia Purchasers
Holt’s is required to collect and remit tobacco excise taxes on the premium cigars you buy from us. The tax we collect is 20% of wholesale price.
Washington State Purchasers
Sales or use tax is due on certain purchases delivered or sourced to Washington. Washington requires you to file a use tax return when sales tax is not paid at the time of purchase. This message is required under the Revised Code of Washington 82.13.020(2)(a)(i).
