Rocky Patel Mulligans Trophy Series Staff Review
When I can see through multiple layers of cigars to the bare bottom of one of my six or seven coolerdors, my immediate impulse is to visit the towering Rocky Patel Mulligans aisle in the Holt’s warehouse where I urgently scoop up enough bundles of premium masterpieces, like the Trophy Series, to patch up any unwanted gaps in my stash. And today I’m espousing my unflinching appraisal of a 5-by-50 Robusto, called the Hook, in the Rocky Patel Mulligans Trophy Series.
If you have yet to experience the fanatical allegiance for Mulligans cigars that grips legions of frugal Rocky Patel fans across the globe, allow me to illuminate the pros of smoking them. As Mulligans devotees know well, Rocky has developed the ultimate formula cranking out high-quality and flavorful smokes for an absurdly affordable price, and Holt’s unlimited warehouse space means we’ve got room for all the Mulligans Rocky wants to ship us.
One of the most popular blends is Trophy Series, a mellow handmade comprised of 100% premium long-filler tobaccos from the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, and Peru that are meticulously assembled under an authentic Connecticut Shade wrapper. And for just under four bucks per cigar, you can score an entire 20-count bundle of the Hook that I’m about to fire up. If you’ve got a taste for Champagne on a Costco budget, Trophy Series cigars should be at the top of your shopping list.
These blond bombshells come in white-and-gold cigar bands, and they emit a nutty bouquet of fresh tobacco the second I strip the cellophane off a new bundle and choose a silky specimen from the center. What impresses me most about Mulligans cigars is their indisputable consistency, regardless of what blend I’m smoking. You’re getting top-notch attention to detail at an entry-level price with Rocky’s name on the band. Seems inconceivable.
The truth is, Mulligans cigars were originally blended and produced at a much higher price point as indicated by their steep MSRPs. Because the cigars are shipped in economical bundles, in lieu of fancy boxes with a big marketing budget behind them, Rocky offers Mulligans exclusively to Holt’s for a huge discount that we pass onto you. In the interest of full disclosure, my unfettered access to deeply discounted premiums, like Mulligans, is a fundamental lynchpin in my long-tenured residency as a professional aficionado at Holt’s.
Trophy Series has been around just over seven years now and is one of the bestselling blends in the entire collection. It’s an excellent introduction to Mulligans cigars if you’re looking for a mellow profile. Following an inviting cold draw, Mulligans Trophy Series warms up with notes of buttered toast, cedar, and almond milk with just a touch of pepper. This is an easy breakfast cigar or something you could enjoy with a cold beer in the afternoon. Technically, the price you pay after the discount qualifies Trophy Series as a yard ‘gar, but the flavor and aroma are way above what you’ll get in a typical utility smoke. Trophy Series is simply too nice to sacrifice if I hit a bump on the tractor mower and my cigar drops out of my mouth.
Hints of cedar, vanilla bean, pepper, and fresh hay develop in the second half. Although, I wouldn’t suggest Trophy Series is an overly complex smoke – it’s too mild for that – it does offer a unique zest, which I gather comes from the Peruvian long-fillers.
After forty-five minutes, I’ve devoured a good chunk of the nub of this Robusto, and I couldn’t be more satisfied. I kind of wish I had chosen a larger size for today’s review on account of how much I’m enjoying its finish. The moral of the story – add a bundle of Rocky Patel Mulligans Trophy Series to your coolerdor ASAP! Two puffs in, you’ll know why Holt’s customers bestow such lavish praise upon Trophy Series and consider it their favorite Rocky Patel cigar to date.
Until next time, long ashes to you!
