Rocky Patel Mulligans Fairway Edition Staff Review
“The point is, ladies and gentlemen, that green—for lack of a better word—is good. Green is right. Green works.” And you don’t have to be Gordon Gekko to appreciate saving some green when you buy cigars. That’s why I’m smoking Rocky Patel Mulligans Fairway Edition, an authentic Candela cigar with an unmistakably green complexion. I’m firing up the 6-by-50 Slice for today’s review.
As the chilly winter temps recede, the golf course and the great outdoors beckon with spring in the forecast and St. Patrick’s Day on the horizon. It's not often I get to indulge in a Candela because green cigar wrappers aren’t exactly commonplace today. Once upon a time, though, they ruled the sales charts. And they hold a special place in my coolerdor because no other wrapper tastes like a Candela. I’ve already reviewed some of the bestselling Candelas in our warehouse, like Angry Elf and Don Lino Casa Verde. Rocky has also been making The Edge Candela for years. Let’s find out how the Mulligans Fairway Edition stacks up.
Rocky Patel Mulligans Fairway Edition cigars come in 20-count bundles with lime-green cigar bands, and they’re handcrafted in five classic sizes. Under the wrapper is a luscious blend of premium Dominican long-filler tobaccos matured for perfectly smooth taste and aroma. The second I tear the cellophane off a fresh bundle and slide a Slice from its individual sleeve, vegetal notes of fresh-cut hay and pine forest perfume my nose with inviting aroma.
This emerald specimen exhibits an oily veil upon its expertly applied wrapper. After a quick excision of the tidy cap with my guillotine cutter, Fairway Edition awakens my taste buds with the signature sweetness you’ll only experience from a Candela cigar. Tasting notes of fresh-cut hay, ripe tobacco, and pepper imbue the cold draw, which comes through the cigar effortlessly, indicating a superior level of construction by the roller.
As I slowly toast the foot of the Slice with my torch lighter, a pleasant profile of grass, honey, and pepper stimulates my palate in the first minutes. Fairway Edition develops with a creamy texture throughout a mellow sequence of tasting notes, including cashew, fresh hay, and spice with hints of citrus. Candela cigars tend to be easygoing, and Fairway Edition is absolutely gauged for fans of mild cigars. For around four bucks apiece, Fairway Edition shapes up as a stellar smoke to enjoy early in the morning or whenever you need a good yard ‘gar that you can puff on passively without stinging your eyes while you’re working on the lawn.
A semi-flaky ash flutters into my matching green Rocky Patel Mulligans ashtray when I gently ash the cigar. Candela wrappers can be fragile due to the high temperatures the tobacco is exposed to during the curing process. Notes of buttered toast, green tea, and fennel mingle with a touch of caramel and spice as the second half unfolds.
Fairway Edition is an approachable smoke, perfect for a beginner. And for the price, it’s easy to scoop up a bundle for your humidor and pass them out when you’ve got some novices in your man cave. After fifty minutes of smoking, the cigar’s soft and milky finish fades fast once I set the nub down to expire. By comparison, I find The Edge Candela is a touch stronger and exhibits a mineral quality that obstructs the naturally smooth character of the wrapper leaf. Fairway Edition, on the other hand, is sublime from start to finish.
As most of you know by now, the distinguished Rocky Patel Mulligans brand is Rocky’s golf-themed franchise and home to dozens of side projects that Rocky has developed over the years. His prolific output precludes him from producing every single cigar he comes up with simply because he hasn’t got enough warehouse space to store the excess inventory. That’s why he created Mulligans with your pals at Holt’s, years ago, as a permanent proving ground for the abundance of new cigars he cranks out in his blending laboratory.
I firmly endorse Fairway Edition if you’re curious about Candela cigars. And if you want to explore Mulligans cigars in general, you’ll find this glowing Candela in three amazing Mulligans samplers: the ‘Albatross’ Collection, the ‘Aces’ Collection, and the ’Hosel Rocket’ Monster Deal. Choose one for your coolerdor without delay!
Until next time, long ashes to you!
