Cain F 550 Staff Review
When it comes to strong cigars fit for a lumberjack, I never steer away. Cain F is a cigar that I reach for often when I am looking for that powerhouse smoke. Today, I am smoking my favorite size in the line, the Cain F 550.
All Cain cigars are handmade by Oliva Cigar Company in Estelí, Nicaragua. Oliva first developed Cain back in 2009 as an all-Ligero blend. Currently there are four distinct blends under the Cain portfolio: Daytona, Habano, Maduro, and F. Cain F is widely known as the strongest of the bunch. The “F” stands for “Force Refined” because Oliva felt like pushing the bounds on strength while keeping the cigar perfectly balanced.
Measuring 5.75 x 50, the Cain F 550 is slightly larger than your standard Robusto. The cigar is very firm with a nice rustic feel. A reddish-hued, oily Nicaraguan Habano wrapper encases a powerful blend of Nicaraguan binder and filler tobaccos, all grown by Oliva Cigar Company. Although the pre-light aroma isn’t robust, there are mild hints of black pepper, cedar, and coffee. The cold draw adds quite a bit more depth with notes of bell peppers, chocolate, leather, and wheat crackers.
Once lit, Cain F tests your taste buds. Initially, I pick up strong hints of cedar and oak while a peppery zest stings the nostrils. As Cain F’s concoction of bold tobaccos warms up, notes of sweet chocolate enter with hints of citrus. Notes of bell peppers and leather begin to overwhelm the profile about an inch in.
As the middle section of the cigar develops, the strength mellows out nicely. Notes of salted peanuts and earth take center stage as the spiciness fades out. A distinct and smoky sweetness that reminiscent of beef jerky arises.
The final stretch of Cain F amps up. Its nicotine strength hits like a haymaker. The sweetness subsides and notes of leather and pepper dominate. By the last inch, the flavor profile comes full circle. Chocolate and espresso notes round out a long, lingering finish.
As is the case with all cigars made by Oliva Cigar Company, the construction of Cain F is outstanding. The burn line was razor sharp throughout the duration of the cigar. The draw had the perfect amount of resistance. Oliva accomplished their goal of creating a full-bodied and balanced blend with Cain F. If you are a fan of strong cigars, look no further.
