Should I Buy a Full Box of Cigars?

If you’ve been smoking cigars for a while but you’re still buying them by the single, or a few at a time, you may be asking yourself, “should I buy a box?” Most premium cigars are packaged in quantities of 20 or 25 cigars, so purchasing a full box can cause a bit of sticker shock. Below, we’ve outlined the best reasons to buy a full box when you’re debating whether to make the investment.

When You Love the Cigar

Sounds obvious, but the most important reason to buy a full box of cigars is because you love a specific cigar. You’ve got to smoke a lot of different cigars when you’re developing your palate. While you’re trying new cigars, is there one you continually come back to? You might have a general preference for Dominican cigars or Nicaraguan cigars, but it’s best to know you really enjoy a blend before you buy a box. A cigar that’s made well and offers consistent taste every time you smoke it is a candidate. Once you’ve narrowed down your favorite blend from a cigarmaker, and there’s a specific cigar size you prefer, it’s safe to stock up on a box for your regular rotation.

When You’ve Got a Humidor

Before you buy a box of cigars, you need to be able to store them at the correct humidity and temperature, ideally in a proper humidor. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to keep cigars fresh without a humidor if you don’t have one. You can’t store them in the fridge, though. Most aficionados purchase a humidor after they’ve been smoking long enough to know what cigars they like. Cigars gradually dry out when they’re not humidified, but you can re-humidify cry cigars within a certain amount of time. It’s best if you’re prepared to store your cigars correctly before you buy a box, even if you’re keeping them in a Ziploc bag with a Boveda pack. Better yet, get a Boveda Humidor Bag, which will keep them fresh for up to a year. As long as you store your cigars at 65-72% RH (relative humidity) and at 65-72 degrees Fahrenheit, you can buy a box and age them indefinitely.

When You Want to Share with Friends

When you’re headed to the golf course or a bachelor party with your buddies, they’ll throw a parade in your honor if you break out a box of good cigars. Sharing cigars with friends is one of the best excuses to buy a full box. Bonding over a campfire with your pals is always better than smoking alone.

When There’s a Great Sale

Another motivating factor to jump on a full box of cigars is a sale. Most premium cigars cost anywhere from a few bucks apiece to twenty or thirty dollars, or more, for a single. The cost of a full box of 20 or 25 cigars can easily run into the hundreds. Fortunately, at Holt’s, we offer new sales on our best cigars every day of the week. When You Smoke Cigars Regularly

Most folks who buy cigars by the box smoke them at a regular frequency. They’ll enjoy a cigar a few times a month or even a few times a week. That means they can finish a full box within a few months, especially if they’re smoking with their friends. If you only smoke one cigar per year, it will take too long to consume a full box, so you’re probably better off buying a single cigar when you’re ready to smoke it. Buy a box of cigars when you’ve got enough time and occasions on the calendar to enjoy them regularly.

When You Find a Rare or Coveted Cigar

Premium cigars are like fine wine. Connoisseurs collect them and will go out of their way to acquire hard-to-find blends in certain sizes from certain years. When you enjoy rare cigars, like Fuente Fuente Opus X, Ashton ESG, or Padrón 80 Years, buy a box when you find them. Not every retailer has access to these coveted classics, so when you’re standing in front of a bucket-list cigar, grab a box if you can afford it.
